Description

Portrait Drawing and Painting

Develop a set of tools and strategies for drawing and painting directly from model. Learn how to portray the unique characteristics and personality of your sitter.

This course provides a sustained period of enquiry to work with the key building blocks to convey likeness and character.

The focus of this course is drawing, enabling you to develop an understanding of your subject.

Projects include drawing and painting exercises where you’ll learn how to use tone to create volume, colour experimentation and palette selection.

All levels of ability welcome.

Course Materials

NEEDED ON FIRST DAY
(Please buy these materials in advance.)

Brushes

  • No.3 round hog
  • No.5 filbert or flat hog
  • No.2 round sable or synthetic
  • Wooden palette approx 25 x 35cm (or disposable palette available from the Heatherleys shop)
  • Straight bladed palette knife
  • Dipper
  • Odourless thinners (turpentine and white spirits not permitted in school) you can buy these from your tutor
  • Jam jar
  • A few small cheap canvas boards 10” x 8” or 10” x 12” inches (available from the Heatherleys shop).

Oil Paints (All preferably artist’s quality)

  • Cadmium Yellow lemon
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Venetian red
  • Cadmium Red
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • French Ultramarine
  • Cerulean blue
  • Ivory black

Optional drawing materials

  • Artists Sketchbook (A4)
  • Drawing pencils (selection)
  • Putty / hard erasers Masking Tape
