Portrait Painting

Wednesday mornings

Tutor: Carl Randall

A course of 10 lessons by National Portrait Gallery London award winning artist Carl Randall, exploring old master and contemporary portrait painting techniques. Using a simplified, structured, and step-by-step approach, students will learn the skills and techniques necessary to be able to paint portraits. Creating portraits that have a convincing sense of shape, form and colour is difficult to do, and this course looks at various techniques used to do this. By learning to interpret the human head into its abstract elements (shape, tone & colour), you will gain confidence in how to paint portraits in a structured and methodical manner. The course offers a balance between traditional academic techniques (used by the old masters); and also more contemporary approaches focusing on mark making and paint texture.

Course Fee: £240

Consists of 10 morning sessions each lasting 3 hours via Zoom.
Wednesdays 10am – 1.00pm
Starting 28 April – 30 June 2021

Imaginative Composition

Tutor: Carl Randall

An exciting and varied course exploring the process behind making original figurative compositions, useful to both painting and drawing students. By examining composition and design in other artist’s work and using a variety of approaches and tools, you will be helped to understand the journey artists make in order to transform ideas into imaginative pictures. This course will include demonstrations and discussion of set project work.
