Illustration – Creating characters

Tutor: Simon Prescott

Have you ever wondered how pictures can tell a story? In this structured course you will be shown how to develop your first ideas and discover your own style as an illustrator. You will learn some of the principles that professional illustrators use to develop narrative and use simple drawing techniques to create your final artwork. Simon is an artist whose images combine magic and humour and he loves using animals in his illustrations for children of all ages. He will show you how to create facial expressions, characters and scenarios for your own stories. He says some drawing or painting experience is great but not essential!

Portrait Painting

Wednesday mornings

Tutor: Carl Randall

A course of ten lessons by artist Carl Randall, exploring processes behind portrait painting. Using a simplified, structured, and step-by-step approach, students will learn the skills and techniques necessary to create convincing portrait paintings. Creating portraits that have a convincing sense of shape, form, tone, and colour is difficult to do, and this course looks at various techniques that artists can use to do this. By interpreting the human head into its abstract elements (shape, tone & colour), you will gain confidence in how to paint portraits in a structured and methodical manner. The course offers a balance in applications of paint: some lessons in which a more graphic and illustrative approach is required using flat, thin paint, and others that focus on thick paint, heavy texture and brush marks.

Consists of 10 morning sessions each lasting 2.5 hours via Zoom.
Wednesdays 10am – 12.30pm
Starting 27 January – 31 March 2021
Course available on a first come, first served basis.
