Heatherleys tutor Laura Smith in her studio

Laura Smith

Laura positions her work near the edge of still life painting, where it approaches abstraction. She is interested in dissolving our familiarity with everyday objects. Currently, she is working with the idea that repeated motifs not only allow for a deeper investigation of the objects themselves but also a freedom in their portrayal. Her work often depicts emotive gestures and actions. Objects take the place of the loved, the abandoned, the closely held.

Laura is an experienced oil painter. Her interests include observational painting and how to carve your own path in the contemporary art world.

Rose Garden by Kate Hopkins

Kate Hopkins

Still life is central to my practice. Working always from direct observation; I create sets in my studio which I observe over extended periods of time, scrutinising abstract patterns and colour relationships in the the scene.  In response, I make, revise, disrupt, and remake repeatedly, accumulating and obliterating, in a search of a tension, order and structural integrity across the picture plane, that satisfies my intentions. I am particularly interested in perception, the grand illusion created by our brain, and resulting issues surrounding representation and visual language in painting.

Kate studied at the Slade from 1985-1991 BA(Hons) and HDFA), and is represented by Browse and Darby

These are difficult times for us all as we deal with isolation, separation and confinement even though artists, and fledgling artists, may be used to working in solitude, and for Painters it’s part of the job. However, feedback on your work, combined with supportive and constructive criticism, is vital for students and can lead to technical and creative progress along with a deepening of vision. By viewing and discussing your paintings and/or drawings on screen, I can offer you my reactions, thoughts and appropriate support, as I would in the teaching studio. I hope that this opportunity to discuss and expand on your technique, aims and objectives will lead you into new and exciting territory.

Claudia Carr

Claudia Carr

I like to have a real (physical) thing in front of me when I paint. The three-way dialogue between the observed, the observer and the canvas, is as much my subject as the still life itself is.
I don’t consciously manipulate scale, but the process of staring at an object or environment, over a long period of time, involves a kind of shrinking, a falling into the motif, merging with, or inhabiting it.
My work with colour is usually about stretching the limits of one colour; playing within the parameters of that colour, often grey (or green, see painting to the left) and exploring and developing the tensions within it.
The difficulty of rendering space and articulating planes, while still honouring the formal (abstract) objectives for each painting, is an ongoing challenge/adventure in my practice.

Natasha Lien at her easel plein air painting

Natasha Lien

Natasha is a figurative artist who paints and draws from life, depicting people, landscapes and cityscapes. She is passionate about learning from the great masters in art history.
She enjoys helping both beginners and more advanced students, responding to each at their own individual level. She can offer practical advice about working with oils and watercolour and subject matter including still life, landscape and cityscape, portraiture and drawing and painting from life.
Natasha says she finds that working from life for many hours is like an act of meditation, as it helps to calm the mind.

Moments

George Levantis

My teaching ability is in locating student’s core interests enabling them to find the fertile ground from which to make work.
In my own practice, I may be spurred on to make work from something I’ve read, for instance Greek Mythology, particularly Daedalus and the Labyrinth and Leda and the Swan which have inspired two bodies of work including a series of drawings and the abstract work in black and white which can be seen in the image of my studio.

Eugenie Vronskaya painting in her studio

Eugenie Vronskaya

What is important to me is painting, not making pictures. For me painting is an invented experience,  not making pictures of something that was already there to be copied. The world as it is already exists beyond anything that could be so easily depicted. However it is only through intense observation of the world around us that we can start to search for our own Visual Language. My teaching is a combination  of working from life, simplifying and abstracting complex visual reality but also bringing an element of play, essential in creativity.
