Susanne Du Toit – Artists Talk

Monday 30 Oct 2017 | 04:30pm

Susanne du Toit is an artist living and working in Berkshire, UK. She has worked in a wide range of media during her career, particularly etching and oil paint. In recent years her practice has become focused on portraits, and in 2013 she won the BP Portrait Award.

Since then, she has been featured in the Ruth Borchard Portrait Prize, the Columbia Threadneedle Prize at Mall Galleries, and the Lynn Painter Stainers Prize. She has also shown work at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions, and won prizes at the Royal Watercolour Society and the Chichester Open Art Exhibitions.

Susanne studied Fine Art at the University of Pretoria in South Africa during the 1970s, and received a Masters in Fine Art from the Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, in the ’80s.

In this talk, Susanne will discuss the progress of her career as a painter, focusing on the ideas that led her in new directions – her conversion from abstract to figurative art during the 1980s, and then, a decade ago, to portraits.

She will talk about the influences that have inspired her, and her routines and day-to-day experiences as a painter. There will be emphasis on how she has incorporated other aspects of her life, such as having a family and being an older artist, into her work. Finally, this will lead her to discuss her most recent series of portraits, Motherhood.
