Description
Drawing from Animals at London Zoo
Inspired by Heatherleys Alumna, Dorothy Burroughs
Join Laura Smith for a morning of drawing from animals at London Zoo. Laura is passionate about drawing from observation. She believes that it slows down our looking and allows us to see more.
On this short course you’ll follow in the footsteps of Heatherleys Alumna, Dorothy Burroughs. Dorothy’s breakthrough as a commercial artist came with a commission to design a zoo poster for London Underground, leading to widespread success. Inspired by Japanese woodcut style, Dorothy’s artistic focus centred on animal paintings and prints. Dorothy’s designs adorned book covers and magazines, and her linocut prints were acquired by museums like the Victoria and Albert Museum. She also authored two illustrated books in 1927: “Queer Beasts at the Zoo” and “Queer Birds at the Zoo.
Laura will draw alongside students, sharing her approach to the activity. The day will begin with a short introduction and suggestions for drawing subjects. Students will then be encouraged to split off and draw from whatever animals most appeals to them for the first part of the morning. Students will then gather together and, after looking at each other’s drawings, will spend time walking through the zoo, looking at the paintings drawn in the morning and sharing thoughts and ideas. Students will be encouraged to seek out subjects that speak to them and respond in their own, unique way.
All levels welcome.
