London Interiors & Cafes
London offers the artist so many exciting opportunities, from the fascination of capturing figures in busy street scenes to the inspiration found in its fantastic museums and cafes.
Many great artists have drawn creativity from the streets, pubs, cafes, and museums of the city.
Each week we will explore a different area and reflect on the artists who were inspired by its character. Our group will spend time in a series of pre-arranged indoor locations, which you will be encouraged to explore through watercolour, oil painting, pastel, and drawing media.
Being part of a supportive and lively group will give you the confidence to tackle the challenge of working on location!
We welcome all abilities.
On the first Wednesday of term we will meet at 10.00am in the Conservatory Gallery / refreshments area on the first floor of the school (located in the middle of the building).

Course Materials
The main recommendation is to keep your equipment as practical and lightweight as possible; a few colours, plastic containers, light wooden easel, small tubes of paint, a few brushes etc.
The following list is for guidance. If you already have a lot of materials bring them, improvise, de-clutter before buying new things.
NB. Possibly the most important equipment is a hat and the sort of clothing which protects you against cold, rain or sun, depending on the weather.
Oil Painting
- Lightweight folding wooden easel (eg W&N ‘Dart’). Box easel if you have one
Supports: canvases or canvas boards. Buy sizes in pairs for ‘corking’ in travel
- Cotton rags, eg old T-shirts.
- Palette: lightweight wood or paper tear-off.
- 2 small metal reservoirs for thinners etc
- Pigments. A limited palette is recommended comprising 2 reds, 2 yellows and 2 blues.
- Recommended to bring: Titanium White, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Cerulean Blue, French Ultramarine, Burnt Umber.
- Brushes: Small, medium and large oil (hog) brushes between sizes 2-6
Watercolour
- Plastic palette with compartments and reservoirs
- One or two good quality brushes (sable or soft animal hair if possible, nylon if not) between sizes 4 to 8
- Specialist watercolour paper min weight 140lb in block for support min size A4
- Small sketch book
- Kitchen roll
- Plastic pots etc for water
- Old water bottle (eg mineral water bottle)
- Limited palette. Same colours as oils above but not white.
- 3B pencil, putty rubber, sharpener
