John Wonnacott Hon.RP CBE- Artists Talk

John Wonnacott was born in London, 1940, and studied at the Slade School of Art, (1958-63). His work was included in The Hard Won Image, Tate Gallery, London, 1984 and in The Pursuit of the Real, Manchester, London and Glasgow, 1990.

He has also held solo exhibitions at The Minories, Colchester, 1977, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, 1986, Agnew’s London, 1992, and Hirschl and Adler, New York, 1999. He has carried out commissions for the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, 1985-6 and the Imperial War Museum, 1990-91.

In 1997, Wonnacott painted the British prime minister John Major. In 2000, he painted the British Royal Family in a 12-foot tall artwork.

Wonnacott is a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), awarded in 2000. He was the 2005 winner of the Ondaatje Prize for portraiture.
