How to Paint Portraits Using Old Masters Techniques
This course is an introduction to various techniques and approaches taken by great portrait painters from the past.
The projects will give you the opportunity to learn how to apply some of the methods used by historical painters, taught in a structured and step by step manner.
Grisaille, Brunaille, & Verdaccio underpainting techniques will be taught, as well as glazing and the use of a ‘cartoon’ preparatory drawing.
Composition and background will also be considered.
— PORTRAIT 1 —
-Lesson 1:
Creating a ‘cartoon’ preparatory drawing (looking at shape and proportion, using only line).
-Lesson 2:
Creating the underpainting of your portrait, using black, white and grey
(Grisalle technique).
-Lesson 3:
Applying colour on top of the previous weeks monochrome underpainting.

-Lesson 1:
Creating a ‘cartoon’ preparatory drawing (looking at shape and proportion, using only line).
-Lesson 2:
Creating the underpainting of your portrait, students chose which technique they would like to use: brown (Brunaille technique), or green (Verdaccio technique).
-Lesson 3:
Applying colour on top of the previous weeks monochrome underpainting.
