Introduction to Oil Painting

Build your confidence in oil painting on this exciting introductory course for beginners.

The tutor Laura Smith says “Here we will be exploring my absolute favourite painting medium! Oil paint is incredibly versatile and can be manipulated in countless ways. This one week course is about giving you a firm foundation on which to build”.

The aim of the course is for you leave feeling excited about what you’ve learned and with the confidence to continue exploring the methods and techniques of oil paint.

Please bring these materials with you when you start the course:
Oil paints (artist’s range) 38ml tubes, in the following colours:

  • Titanium white
  • Cadmium yellow
  • Cadmium red
  • French Ultramarine blue

Low odour thinners (can be purchased at Heatherleys). IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT low odour thinners: For health reasons please do not bring white spirit or turpentine to Heatherleys.

  • 3 brushes hog bristle (sizes 1, 4, 8)
  • Large tear-off palette
  • Double dippers or two empty jam jars
  • Palette knife
  • Kitchen roll / old rags
  • Apron
  • Permanent marker

Optional

  • Linseed oil

Paper and canvases can be bought from your tutor.
