Introduction to Drawing and Painting
An exciting introductory drawing and painting week for beginners, intended to build your confidence in making art.
You will be guided through the building blocks of both drawing and painting.
We will begin the week with drawing, exploring different techniques and using structured exercises to help you look more effectively. From this foundation we will move into using paint and colour, working with a range of subject matter including still life and the interior. You can choose to use acrylics or oils.
The aim of the course is for you to leave feeling encouraged by the progress you have made and excited about exploring drawing and painting in the future.

Course Materials
Please bring these materials with you when you start the course:
- Willow charcoal
- Putty rubber and plastic/hard rubber
- Masking Tape
Required on Day 3:
Oil or Acrylic paints (artist’s range) 38ml tubes, in the following colours:
- Titanium white
- Cadmium yellow
- Alizarin crimson
- French Ultramarine blue
Low odour thinners (can be purchased at Heatherleys). Not required for acrylics.
Only bring low odour thinners with you (you can buy it from the school shop). For health reasons we do not tolerate the use of white spirit or turpentine at Heatherleys.
- 3 brushes hog bristle (sizes 1, 4, 8)
- Large tear-off palette
- Double dippers or two empty jam jars
- Palette knife
- Kitchen roll / old rags
- Apron
- Permanent marker
Optional
- Linseed oil (not required for acylics)
Paper and canvases can be bought from your tutor.
