Description

Sculptural Ceramics

Learn how to make both functional and sculptural objects. Develop an understanding of materials and processes and enhance your design skills.

Learn how to hand build with slabs, coils and press moulds. Explore surface techniques such as painting with coloured clay slips, oxides, glazing and incorporating texture through mark making.

The course allows you to develop your skills in a comprehensive and personal way, catering to your specific interests. The tutor will offer demonstrations and one-to-one guidance so you can work at your own pace using the processes you enjoy most.

The use of a sketchbook in and outside of class will encourage you to make notes, gather visual and technical information and explore ideas. Your tutor will suggest visits to exhibitions to broaden your knowledge, investigate new concepts and techniques in order to learn more about ceramic art.

All materials are provided including a wide range of high firing clays and glazes.

This course is a wonderful way to create work in a supportive environment. Suitable for beginners and those wishing to improve upon their skills.

Materials List

Please bring these materials with you when you start the course. Your tutor will discuss tools with you on the first day of the course.

  • Sketchbook / notebook
  • Any pottery tools that you may already own
  • A variety of paint brushes
  • Apron – preferably plastic so it can be wiped down or routinely wash your fabric apron as breathing in silica clay dust is harmful long term.
  • Clothes and shoes you don’t mind getting dirty.
