Postgraduate Diploma in Figurative Painting

Students on the Post Diploma come from a variety of backgrounds, and we value the diverse experience they bring to the course. Many are seeking a focused period of development and support as they transition from diploma or degree-level study in figurative or portrait painting to establishing themselves as independent artists.

We welcome applications from highly motivated individuals with the potential to benefit from this one-year course. Applicants should have completed a Diploma or BA in Fine Art and demonstrate a strong commitment to figurative painting. Familiarity with oil painting techniques and prior studio experience are essential. The course is open to students aged 19 and over, including mature applicants.

The Post Diploma is designed to offer highly personalised, in-depth support through a favourable tutor-to-student ratio. Students typically work in small groups of 6 to 10, sharing a painting studio and engaging in regular one-to-one discussions with tutors. In addition to individual project guidance, students benefit from seminars, group critiques, and scheduled tutorials each term with the Course Director and other members of the teaching staff.

Personal tutorials with the Course Coordinator focus on identifying and developing each student’s individual direction. Contextual studies are supported through seminars on both contemporary and historical practices, including contributions from leading contemporary artists. Recent guest tutors include Flora Yukhnovich and Oli Epp, who offered valuable insights into technical processes, critical thinking, and studio approaches.

In the early stages of the course, emphasis is placed on drawing and memory as tools for developing figurative imagery. Collage and mixed media are also explored to help students discover their personal visual language and subject matter. A critical component of the programme involves examining the relationship between photography and painting. Techniques such as image transfer, photo-screen printing, and traditional printmaking are introduced, alongside a wide range of contemporary painting strategies.

The course also supports work with live models, which can be arranged in consultation with the Course Coordinator, depending on individual project needs. Students are encouraged to source figure subjects from their personal experiences, and the complexities of this process are discussed in both individual and group settings. Throughout the course, students are guided in understanding aesthetic decision-making, the communication of meaning and intent, and how to place their work within broader social and art historical contexts.

On completion of the course students will mount an exhibition of resolved works in the school which will be open to the public. This will be held and assessed in September.

The Post Diploma Course occupies a large studio with plentiful natural light. Easels, studio furnishings, storage and cleaning facilities for oil paint are provided. Students should provide their own equipment and materials for painting. There is a fully equipped Print Studio for printing projects. Your project tutor and a printmaking technician will guide you in the use of these facilities.

Throughout the course, you will receive guidance on how to establish and sustain a professional artistic practice. Key aspects such as exhibiting, selling your work, developing an online presence, and navigating the commercial gallery system will be explored in detail. Practical strategies for meeting these challenges will be shared, helping you build confidence and clarity in your professional goals.

An emphasis will be placed on articulating your ideas, with support in developing the language to discuss your work critically and effectively. Visiting artists will offer insight into their own careers, sharing valuable experience on promoting their work, securing exhibitions, and building long-term visibility in the art world.
