Description

Join award winning tutor Melissa Scott Miller RP for a week of plain air painting. Discover the joy and freedom of painting outdoors as you learn the techniques and processes of drawing and painting the urban landscape.

What to expect

Some preparation and realisation of work will be carried out in the studio, although most painting will be outdoors – weather permitting. Locations will be within easy reach of the school’s premises in Lots Road, Chelsea.

About Melissa Scott Miller RP

Melissa Scott-Miller is a highly accomplished painter who has achieved significant recognition for her work. She was elected a member of the Royal British Artists in 2018, and has won numerous awards, including the Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize (£15,000) in 2008. Her work has been shown in many group exhibitions, including the Mark Jason Gallery; New English Art Club; Royal Society of Portrait Painters. She has had several solo exhibitions in New York. Melissa is currently a tutor at Heatherleys School of Fine Art and the Royal Drawing School.

Course Materials

THINGS TO BRING:
~ Hat

~ Lightweight easel (some at Heatherleys)

~ Fold up stool if you wish to sit (you may prefer to stand)

~ Baby wipes and Kitchen towels

~ Paints (oil or watercolours, etc.) suggested colours: titanium white, yellow ochre, ultramarine blue, burnt or raw umber, cadmium red viridian, alizarin crimson, venetian red, optional; cadmium lemon yellow, cerulean blue, sap green

~ Brushes flat end and one small one for details

~ Tear-off (disposable) palette

~ Charcoal and fixative and putty rubber or HB pencil

~ Small canvasses say 20″ x 16″ or 24″ x 20″ (alternatively watercolour pad)


This is a typical example of what we will do during the week:

Monday
10.00 talk about painting outside, materials etc

11.00 go to Cremorne Gardens. There is a covered area if it rains, start a morning painting

14.00 – 16.00 Westfield Park looking at street afternoon painting

Tuesday

Morning: Cremorne Gardens

Afternoon: Westfield Park

Wednesday

Morning: roof at Heatherleys

Afternoon: roof at Heatherleys (if raining we will draw at V&A)

Thursday

Same as Wed but if it rains paint from drawings made at V&A

Friday

Morning: Battersea Park (if it rains paint from band stand)

15.00: Critique back in the studio, look at work we’ve done during the week.
