Introduction to Drawing & Painting

An introductory drawing and painting course intended to build the beginner’s confidence. We will encourage you to explore different materials and techniques to establish your own style. Project themes are based on the figure, portraiture and still life studies. Field trips and museum visits are also included.

Course Material

Please bring these materials with you when you start the course:

  • Charcoal (2 medium sticks)
  • Putty Rubber
  • Masking Tape

Required after week 1 (liaise with tutor):

  • Oil paints (artist’s range) 38ml tubes
  • Cadmium Red
  • French Ultramarine Blue
  • Cadmium Yellow
  • Titanium White Low odour thinners (sold at Heatherley’s)

Please only bring low odour thinners with you or buy them from us. For health & safety reasons we do not allow the use of white spirit or turpentine at Heatherley’s. There is a brush cleaning machine provided.

  • Brushes size 3, 5, 8 (flat hog bristle)
  • Large tear-off palette
  • Double dippers
  • Palette knife
  • Kitchen roll / old rags

OPTIONAL:

  • Purified Linseed
  • Oil Apron
