Drawing and Painting Portraits

Learn to draw and paint the human head from direct observation. You will be encouraged to express your own personal vision in oil paints via the study of basic anatomy, gesture and facial expression. The aim of the course is for you to leave feeling confident in the progress you have made and looking forward to exploring other aspects of drawing and painting the model in the future. A portrait model will be available every day. This course is suitable for students of all levels.

Students are required to bring their own materials and should refer to the materials list below before their course starts.

Drawing and Painting Portraits

This basic materials list represents the minimum requirement for the course. Drawing materials may be purchased directly from your tutor on the first day of the course. At that time, you will also receive further guidance and advice on materials.

  • Oil paint 38ml tubes:
    • Cadmium Red
    • Alizarin Crimson
    • French Ultramarine Blue
    • Cadmium Yellow
    • Yellow Ochre
    • Titanium White
  • Low odour thinners (can be purchased at the school)
  • Brushes size 3, 5, 8 (flat hog bristle)
  • Large tear-off or wooden palette
  • Double dippers
  • Palette knife
  • Kitchen roll / rags

Optiona materials:

  • Purified Linseed Oil
  • Apron

For health reasons we do not allow the use of white spirit or turpentine at Heatherleys.
