Advanced Portrait Painting

On this advanced oil painting course you’ll develop an understanding of the art of portrait painting.

Explore the process of painting a long poses in oils over several weeks.

Enhance your understanding of relevant aspects of human anatomy through drawing the head and figure.

Materials List

Please bring these materials with you when you start the course:

Oil paint
There are generally 2 kinds of oil paint “artist quality “ which is recommended for a more experienced painter.

Other paint is better suited for those who are just beginning
Heatherleys sells an excellent range of mid -priced good quality oil paint.


  • Titanium white
  • Yellow ochre
  • Lemon yellow
  • Cadmium yellow pale
  • Light red or venetian red
  • Cadmium red
  • Alizarin crimson
  • Ultramarine blue
  • Raw umber
  • Ivory black

There are generally 2 kinds of brushes for oil paint; nylon /synthetic brushes and hog hair brushes. A range of sizes are required.

  • Long flats or long filberts are recommended. Short flats re not recommended.
  • A pointed brush for detail
  • Long handles are preferable

“tear off” paper palettes are very useful

Low odour thinners . Availlable from the Heatherleys shop

Mandatory in all the classes

  • Dippers – Dippers are small tins approx 4cm in diameter. Used to hold thinners
  • Palette knife
  • A palette knife in shape of a trowel is best recommended
    Canvas or canvas board to paint upon is required

An apron or old shirt is always useful
