Advanced Oil Painting

Tutor: Kate Hopkins | Thursdays 10am-4pm | 12 weeks 

This advanced oil painting course is designed for artists with some practical experience who wish to deepen their understanding of colour, composition, and the abstract qualities that underpin strong visual work. Through sustained studio practice, you’ll develop your own painterly language while working from a range of subjects, including still life and a portrait model. Focusing on direct observation, the course explores the formal relationships between drawing and colour, encouraging critical thinking around visual perception and technique.

Not suitable for beginners. Students are required to bring their own materials and should refer to the materials list below before their course starts.

Course Information

Advanced Oil Painting

Please bring these materials with you when you start the course:

Oil paints (artist’s range) 38ml tubes

  • Titanium white
  • Lemon yellow
  • Cadmium yellow
  • Cadmium red
  • Alizarin crimson
  • Ultramarine blue
  • Prussian/cerulean blue

Other

  • Low odour solvent (eg sansodor or shelsol)
  • Palette
  • Palette knife
  • Brushes (to be discussed in class)
  • A couple of jars with lids
  • Rags or paper towels
  • Apron or other protective clothing

Please only bring low odour thinners with you or buy them from the Heatherleys shop. For health & safety reasons we do not allow the use of white spirit or turpentine.
