This is a course for beginners and for those who have some experience
of this medium. The aim will be to provide a comprehensive introduction
to the materials and techniques of oil painting, giving you a
clear understanding of colour, tone and composition. Subject
matter includes the human figure and still life projects.

During this course you will
study the human head both from
an objective and a subjective
point of view. A visual language
for drawing and painting the
portrait will be developed
via the observation of anatomy,
gesture and facial expression.
A portrait model will be available
every day.

Introduction
to Drawing and Life Drawing
Course 3

This course is aimed particularly at those who have a limited
experience of life drawing. Approaches to the drawing process
and use of media will provide a visual vocabulary for figurative
composition. Part of the course will focus on the interpretation
of tonal values in subject matter. There will also be an introduction
to human anatomy and its relevance to the artist. A life model
will be available for part of the course.

Drawing
and Painting Outdoors
Course 12
9 – 13 August
The tutors on this course will present
a range of techniques and processes required to draw and paint
the urban landscape. Some preparation and realisation of work
will be carried out in the studio although the majority of painting
will be outdoors – weather permitting. Locations will all
be within easy reach of the school's premises in Lots Road.

Printmaking
Course 4
26 – 30 July

These two printmaking courses are particularly
suitable for beginners. Course 4 will cover aspects of etching
and woodcut with imagery being developed from still life and
the figure. There will also be the opportunity to experiment
with the visual effects of the printmaking process. Course
15 will offer an introduction to silkscreen again combining
figurative subject matter and the experimental use of printmaking
processes. |

Watercolour
Painting - Landscape
Course 9
9 – 13 August
Watercolourists have long been fascinated by the opportunities
for painting presented by the landscape.We will explore all the
basic techniques of watercolour, including the use of washes,
glazing, wet into wet painting and texture. References will be
used for studio work and we will take the opportunity to paint
directly out of doors. This structured course is suitable for
beginners and for more experienced students.

23 – 27 August
A step-by-step guide through the use of watercolour techniques
will enable students to gain confidence in using this fascinating
medium. Glazing, painting wet into wet, the use of colour and
choice of paper will be introduced and you will be able to develop
your own approach through subjects that include still life, flower
painting, landscape and the human figure. This course is suitable
for beginners and for those who wish to re-cap and practise their
watercolour techniques.

Painting from the Life Model

This course is for those who have
some experience of oil painting and
who wish to work on an ambitious
painting. Advice will be given on
selection of colours and the technical
principles of oil painting. This
course is intended to help you develop
your individual potential. A life
model is available throughout.

During this course you will have the opportunity to model a
life-size human head and make a small scale figure. You will
be introduced to the casting process and be encouraged to appreciate
both objective and subjective values in figurative sculpture. |

Objective
Life Drawing and Painting
Course 20
31 July, 7, 14, 21, 28 August
(5 consecutive Saturdays)
This is an advanced objective life drawing and painting course
in which the same pose will be maintained throughout five Saturdays.
The course is intended for those who are interested in the
representation of the human figure by a measured and sustained
approach. |
