Printmaking class visit Norman Ackroyd R.A.

Hilary Daltry has taken her printmaking students on a couple of interesting field-trips this Autumn. Firstly to the V&A Prints and Drawing Department and secondly to meet her friend, and former tutor, Norman Ackroyd. She said of the experience:

‘During my Friday printmaking programme I always encourage students to look at prints first hand. We went to the V&A Prints and Drawing department where you can view original prints by artists such as Picasso, Hokusai and Munch. The class were able to draw the prints in situ and also take inspiration from seeing the detail up close in the flesh. On this occasion we were studying a series of animal prints by Picasso using the sugarlift technique we have been experimenting with and learning in class!

Our second visit was to Norman Ackroyd’s studio. He was able to show us the very recipe that Picasso had used. This gave us great insight into the way Ackroyd works on his own landscape etchings, using aquatint as a starting point. It was fascinating for the students who have learned so much from watching the artist in his own working environment.’
