Heatherleys at the Discerning Eye 2016

Well done to Shelly Bancroft, Fred Crayk, Flora Watson and Mark Wiles who all have work in this year’s Discerning Eye Exhibition.

Particular congratualtions go to Mark, who won the Humphrey’s Purchase Prize for his piece ’Loss’. He says:

’Following ’retirement’, I started coming to Heatherleys about 5 years ago, first to the Open Studio, and then to John Dean’s figurative sculpture class. Since 2013 I’ve been in Veronica Ricks’ stone carving group where this piece was undertaken. Unlike the clay modelling groups, the stone carvers each work on independent sculptures but we gain enormously from each other’s input through comment, knowledge & skills in addition to the excellent tutor guidance which we receive.

I was prompted to submit a sculpture to the annual ING Discerning Eye exhibition at the Mall Galleries because of previous visits to their exhibitions and the fact that 3 or so years ago I contributed to a demonstration of ’doing’ sculpture that Heatherleys put on there on the Friends (of Discerning Eye)preview evening.

The Humphreys Purchase Prize was awarded for ’Loss’ a sculpture in Ancaster weatherbed limestone 12’x5’x5’. This piece forms part of an exploration of interactions between people. The form is basically simple and tries to capture a moment of profound loss shared by two individuals. The warm quality of this Jurassic era oolitic limestone with its characteristic blue inclusions seems to reflect the mood. Someone else was obviously in sympathy as the piece sold too!’

The exhibition continues at the Mall Galleries until the 27th of November.
